Establishing a Field-Based Literacy Lab. Professional Development Guide.
Worthy, Jo; Prater, Sheryl; Turner, Margo; Elliott, Bonnie M.
Created to offer staff development to local school districts and instructors of preservice teachers in Texas, this guide explains how to design a successful intervention program that provides short-term, intensive, one-on-one instruction for children who need help with reading and writing. In these materials, participants will learn about field-based literacy labs in general and about a particular lab called The Reading Club. The information and activities are designed to generate discussion about the issues involved in establishing a lab, including organization and instructional approaches that support the state curriculum (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, TEKS). It includes five sections of materials for workshop presenters: (1) an Introduction; (2) Professional Development, which includes speaker's notes and activities to accompany the overhead transparencies; (3) Handouts and Overhead Masters, which present key points and activities for the workshop; (4) Readings/Forms; and (5) Appendix, which contain 19 references.
