Course Withdrawal, Data Summary--Fall 1976. Tex-SIS FOLLOW-UP; Postsecondary Student Follow-up Management Information System. Monograph 3.
Texas Education Agency, Austin. Dept. of Occupational Education and Technology.
Ten Texas community colleges participated in a fall, l976, college withdrawal survey, yielding a total of 1,102 responses. Students classified as "illegal/undefined" majors accounted for 32% of withdrawals, followed by "university transfer/academic" majors (27%), "undecided" (21%), and "occupational/technical" (19%). Conflicting job hours were cited by 19% as the reason for withdrawing, while 16% noted attendance problems, 12% indicated personal/family illness or injury, and 14% indicated other personal/family reasons. When academic majors were considered separately, 23% of those with university transfer/academic majors compared with 14% of those with occupational/technical majors, cited job hours conflict as the reason for college withdrawal. Of all students withdrawing, 58% expected to continue their education in the future and 49% were employed over forty hours per week. Financial aid services had been used by 35% of withdrawing students, counseling by 30%, and veterans services by 25%. Eighty percent were either "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with their college experience. A state-local comparison worksheet is provided in the document for individual college use. (RT)
