The rise in microcomputer applications to counseling prompted a study to determine the extent of microcomputer hardware and software use in the counseling and career planning centers of Virginia's education system and to establish a point of contact list so that potential buyers could talk to individuals already using a particular piece of hardware or software. Surveys were completed by personnel from 174 high school counseling centers, 27 community college counseling centers/career planning offices, and 26 public and private 4-year college career planning and placement offices in Virginia. Respondents were asked to indicate what microcomputer equipment and software programs were available for use and to rate their effectiveness. Results indicated that the counseling and career planning offices of Virginia's educational system had largely integrated microcomputers into the counseling process, primarily in the information/data management area and for administrative use. There was an average of three microcomputers and four major software programs in use per school in the survey. This directory presents 24 tables and 10 graphs of survey results. Rank orders of equipment and software are included and individual school synopses are provided for schools participating in the survey. Names and addresses of the contact person in each counseling center are included for individuals wanting to obtain more detailed operational information on hardware or software.
