Wyse, Adam E.; Albano, Anthony D. – Applied Measurement in Education, 2015
This article used several data sets from a large-scale state testing program to examine the feasibility of combining general and modified assessment items in computerized adaptive testing (CAT) for different groups of students. Results suggested that several of the assumptions made when employing this type of mixed-item CAT may not be met for…

Penfield, Randall D. – Applied Measurement in Education, 2006
This study applied the maximum expected information (MEI) and the maximum posterior-weighted information (MPI) approaches of computer adaptive testing item selection to the case of a test using polytomous items following the partial credit model. The MEI and MPI approaches are described. A simulation study compared the efficiency of ability…

Kingsbury, G. Gage; Zara, Anthony R. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1991
This simulation investigated two procedures that reduce differences between paper-and-pencil testing and computerized adaptive testing (CAT) by making CAT content sensitive. Results indicate that the price in terms of additional test items of using constrained CAT for content balancing is much smaller than that of using testlets. (SLD)

Hambleton, Ronald K.; Jones, Russell W. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1994
The impact of capitalizing on chance in item selection on the accuracy of test information functions was studied through simulation, focusing on examinee sample size in item calibration and the ratio of item bank size to test length. (SLD)

Barnes, Laura L. B.; Wise, Steven L. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1991
One-parameter and three-parameter item response theory (IRT) model estimates were compared with estimates obtained from two modified one-parameter models that incorporated a constant nonzero guessing parameter. Using small-sample simulation data (50, 100, and 200 simulated examinees), modified 1-parameter models were most effective in estimating…

Wise, Steven L., Ed.; And Others – Applied Measurement in Education, 1988
Six papers on the use of partial credit item response theory score models in applied measurement settings are presented. These applications include the scoring of medical certification examinations using computer-based patient simulations, narrative writing tests, and educational diagnosis. (TJH)

Powers, Donald E.; And Others – Applied Measurement in Education, 1993
A small-scale simulation investigated the impact of making essay topics available to test takers before the test. Results with 11 college students reveal little effect of the prepublished topic. Implications for teacher licensure examinations are discussed with reference to the Praxis Series: Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers being…
