Although understandings of scientific inquiry (as opposed to conducting inquiry) are included in science education reform documents around the world, little is known about what students have learned about inquiry during their elementary school years. This is partially due to the lack of any assessment instrument to measure understandings about…

Forbes, Cory T.; Davis, Elizabeth A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2010
Curriculum materials are crucial tools with which teachers engage students in science as inquiry. In order to use curriculum materials effectively, however, teachers must develop a robust capacity for pedagogical design, or the ability to mobilize a variety of personal and curricular resources to promote student learning. The purpose of this study…

Hall, John Ruthven – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Two British elementary classes were taught chemistry by either Scheme A, involving the idea of chemical reactions as combination or decomposition, or Scheme B, the Nuffield inductive method utilizing heat and weight changes. Test results showed that Class A performed significantly better. (MLH)

Howes, Elaine V. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2002
Describes characteristics that may assist prospective elementary teachers in developing effective, inclusive science instruction; link them to requirements for teaching; and suggest how science teacher educators might draw on the strengths of their own students to support teaching practices aimed at universal scientific literacy. Findings describe…

Barba, Robertta H. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1993
Examined 57 randomly selected elementary bilingual/bicultural science classrooms in terms of culturally syntonic variables (e.g., culture-of-origin beliefs and/or practices that impact the teaching/learning process). Some findings indicate that Hispanic/Latino children are receiving science instructions with culturally asyntonic materials and in…

Johnson, Roger T. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Concluded that sixth-graders in inquiry-oriented science classes perceived cooperation between students; those in textbook-oriented classes perceived competition between students. (MLH)

Santiesteban, A. Joseph – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Elementary school science students taught by preservice teachers trained to ask observation and classification questions were administered an attitude measure. Results showed a significant difference only on a frustration measure, with the experimental group exhibiting more frustration than a control group. (MLH)

Nelson, Bess J.; White, Arthur L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1975
Analysis of teacher questionnaires sent to all public elementary schools in the Mideast, New England, and Southwest regions of the United States showed that an adequate budget for supplies and equipment may not be sufficient to get the teachers to use innovative teaching techniques; inservice training appears to be necessary. Tjosvold, Dean; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Investigates the consequences of inquiry and didactic teaching when students either cooperate or compete with each other on (a) students' acceptance of the teaching method, (b) their approval of the teacher, (c) their experience of peer support, and (d) their beliefs that they have learned. Eighty fourth and fifth grade students were randomly…

Penick, John E.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Two teacher behavior patterns differing in the degree of directiveness utilized by the teacher were investigated. The results show that teacher behavior does effect student behavior in elementary science classes where hands on activities are employed and presents evidence that materials, activities, and curricula cannot be made teacher-proof. Stronck, David R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1983
Investigated attitudes and learning of students (N=816) in 31 museum tours. Concluded that students (grades 5-7) had greater cognitive learning when participating in structured tours (led by museum docent). However, more positive attitudes were found when students participated in less structured tours lead by their classroom teacher. (JN)

Good, Ron; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1976
Studied classroom behaviors and conservation ability of elementary school science students taught by either Student-Structured Learning in Science (SSLS) or Teacher-Structured Learning in Science (TSLS). Reports on how behavior of conservers and nonconservers differs in SSLS and TSLS with respect to observing, following directions, and inventing…

Vanek, Eugenia Poporad; Montean, John J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
No significant differences were found for grade level, sex, or instructional treatment (activity-based curriculum vs. textbook approach) for third and fourth grade science students as measured by Piagetian Classification Tasks, the Science Attitude Scale, and the Science Achievement Test. (MLH)
