Leron, Uri; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1995
Undergraduates in an abstract algebra course were interviewed to see how they learned the concept of isomorphism. Analysis showed students used step-by-step procedures, exhibited various degrees of personification in their language, and chose properties they perceived as simpler. (MKR)

Markovits, Henry – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
College students were given two paper-and-pencil conditional reasoning tests, one week apart, in varying order. The three problems on each test were presented either verbally or with line drawings as concrete referents. Performance was significantly poorer on the problems with drawings. (MNS)

Schwarz, Baruch; Dreyfus, Tommy – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1995
A computer microworld called Triple Representation Model uses graphical, tabular, and algebraic representations to influence conceptions of function. A majority of students were able to cope with partial data, recognize invariants while coordinating actions among representations, and recognize invariants while creating and comparing different…

Thompson, Patrick W. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1994
Discusses a teaching experiment with (n=19) senior and graduate mathematics students. Analysis suggests that students' difficulties with the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus stem from impoverished concepts of rate of change and from poorly developed and coordinated images of functional covariation and multiplicatively constructed quantities.…

Adi, Helen; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1980
The thought processes of 507 elementary, secondary, and university students engaged in problem-solving situations are examined in this study. Results indicated that pupils who got correct answers often showed incorrect reasoning justifications. No significant sex differences were indicated. (MP)

Movshovitz-Hadar, Nitsa; Hadass, Rina – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1990
Reported is a naturalistic study of the role of mathematical paradoxes in the preservice education of high school mathematics teachers. Findings indicate that the model of resolving paradoxes as applied in this study has relevance to such aspects of mathematics education as cognitive conflicts, motivation, misconceptions, and constructive…

Freudenthal, Hans – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1993
Based on the premise that body experiences interfere inconveniently with scientific ideas in mechanics instruction. Suggests that learning processes start with body experiences and, with guidance, transform them into something scientific. Discusses this process for the static and kinetic aspects of force and for measurement. (MDH)

Breidenback, Daniel; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1992
Asserts that college students lack understanding of the concept of function. Based on an epistemological theory, offers an instructional treatment using computers that presents a process concept of function and results in substantial improvements in student understanding for many students.
