Katzer, Jeffrey; Moell, Patricia – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
There is evidence which suggests that users' attitudes toward on-line interactive retrieval systems may be multi-dimensional. Because this earlier work was based upon factor analysis of the data, it was essential that a replication be attempted. To this end a previous study with a new population of users was repeated. Descriptors: Attitudes, Information Retrieval, Information Utilization, Online Systems

Williams, Martha E. – Journal of Library Automation, 1977
This paper discusses vehicles for education and training, tools and techniques for promotion, and details the information requirements of the processors, service managers, searchers, and end users of on-line data bases. (Author/KP)
Descriptors: Databases, Information Utilization, Library Education, Library Instruction
Barber, A. Stephanie; And Others – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The use of an on-line information retrieval system by the scientists themselves is described. MEDUSA was designed to allow physicians to interrogate the MEDLARS data base. A Brief description is given of the system and details of an experiment to test its effectiveness. (8 references) (Author)
Descriptors: Information Retrieval, Information Scientists, Information Utilization, Medical Research

Borman, Lorraine; Mittman, Benjamin – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972
The question of how a scholar can be induced to take advantage of computer technology and capabilities in his search for information is the subject of this paper. Students accept on-line bibliographic searching more readily than research workers. (6 references (Author/SJ)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Computers, Information Seeking, Information Utilization

Casey, Michael – Online Review, 1980
Presents user orientation and instruction guidelines for online search systems, including a sample reference manual outline in five parts: (1) introduction, (2) summary of services, (3) system descriptions, (4) principles of searching, and (5) operating instructions. Harmonization of search instructions is advocated, in order to eliminate user…
Descriptors: Coordination, Guidelines, Information Utilization, Instructional Materials
Reed, Peter – Internet World, 1995
Considers ethical questions related to the copying and use of information from World Wide Web sites, especially graphics. Copyright violation, control of distribution, commercial online users, problems of perception, asking permission, and standards of ethical behavior are discussed. (LRW)
Descriptors: Computer Graphics, Computer Networks, Copyrights, Ethics
And Others; Byrd, Gary D. – Library Journal, 1979
Summarizes use statistics for the first year of search activity for the Kansas City Libraries Metropolitan Information Network (MINET). Included are databases searched, types of participating libraries, patron status, search systems used, charges, nonpaid searches, and referrals. (SW)
Descriptors: Databases, Documentation, Information Utilization, Libraries

Freides, Thelma – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1982
Reviews the origin, current state of development, and subject coverage of the secondary access services available to American social scientists, including bibliographic services for the various academic disciplines and a large variety of specialized services for subdisciplines and interdisciplinary fields. A 10-item reference list accompanies the…
Descriptors: Abstracting, Automation, Databases, Indexes
Huston, Mary M. – Library Journal, 1979
Reviews research findings on the effects of user fees in online searching, and concludes that charging does discourage use of computerized retrieval systems. It is recommended that alternatives to direct user fees be sought whenever possible. (SW)
Descriptors: Financial Policy, Information Needs, Information Retrieval, Information Utilization
Veith, Richard H. – 1978
The international character of online bibliographic databases is assessed by addressing three major aspects: literature production, article selection, and database use, as well as a number of side issues such as distribution and language. Requests for information were sent to producers and suppliers, most of whom responded, with no attempt being…

Jensen, Rebecca J.; And Others – Special Libraries, 1980
Over 53 percent of 159 NASA-Small Business Administration clients and industrial clients, surveyed for dollar costs and benefits of online computerized literature searches, identified dollar benefits. A direct ratio between benefits derived and client dollars invested, averaging 2.9 to 1, was demonstrated. Data tables are presented. (Author/JD)
Descriptors: Cost Effectiveness, Costs, Industry, Information Systems
Auld, Dennis – 1982
Changes affecting the delivery of information over the next 10 years are going to be more numerous, farther reaching, and more rapid than those experienced in the last 10 years. Technological, legislative, economic, and sociological factors are all playing vital roles in shaping the environment within which database information services operate.…

Trubkin, Loene – 1982
Despite investment in new research tools and techniques, the product development success rate has not improved within the last 25 years. One way to increase the success rate is to have the right information at each stage of the process. Today, a relatively new method of gathering information--online access to electronic files called…
Descriptors: Business, Databases, Information Needs, Information Services

Taylor, Robert S. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1982
Discusses information systems in which information use becomes the prime design factor rather than technology and content. Highlighted topics include the change of useless data to productive knowledge, a value-added process; environments in which problems requiring information exist; and users' perceptions of the benefits and costs of using…
Descriptors: Data Processing, Environment, Information Needs, Information Retrieval
Ewbank, W. Bruce – Drexel Library Quarterly, 1982
Suggests standards designed to guide potential database users through a systematic evaluation process to choose database appropriate for particular application. Comparison standards are provided for database content (scope, completeness, source coverage, selection/evaluation, redundancy, references); database systems (documentation, accessibility,…
