Schneider, M. Christina; Agrimson, Jared; Veazey, Mary – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 2022
This paper presents results of a score interpretation study for a computer adaptive mathematics assessment. The study purpose was to test the efficacy of item developers' alignment of items to Range Achievement-Level Descriptors (RALDs; Egan et al.) against the empirical achievement-level alignment of items to investigate the use of RALDs as the…

Moon, Jung Aa; Keehner, Madeleine; Katz, Irvin R. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 2019
The current study investigated how item formats and their inherent affordances influence test-takers' cognition under uncertainty. Adult participants solved content-equivalent math items in multiple-selection multiple-choice and four alternative grid formats. The results indicated that participants' affirmative response tendency (i.e., judge the…

Koretz, D.; Langi, M. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 2018
Most studies predicting college performance from high-school grade point average (HSGPA) and college admissions test scores use single-level regression models that conflate relationships within and between high schools. Because grading standards vary among high schools, these relationships are likely to differ within and between schools. We used…

An, Chen; Braun, Henry; Walsh, Mary E. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 2018
Making causal inferences from a quasi-experiment is difficult. Sensitivity analysis approaches to address hidden selection bias thus have gained popularity. This study serves as an introduction to a simple but practical form of sensitivity analysis using Monte Carlo simulation procedures. We examine estimated treatment effects for a school-based…

Kingston, Neal M.; Anderson, Gretchen – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 2013
Scores on state standards-based assessments are readily available and may be an appropriate alternative to traditional placement tests for assigning or accepting students into particular courses. Many community colleges do not require test scores for admissions purposes but do require some kind of placement scores for first-year English and math…

Welsh, Megan E.; D'Agostino, Jerome V.; Kaniskan, Burcu – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 2013
Standards-based progress reports (SBPRs) require teachers to grade students using the performance levels reported by state tests and are an increasingly popular report card format. They may help to increase teacher familiarity with state standards, encourage teachers to exclude nonacademic factors from grades, and/or improve communication with…

Kopriva, Rebecca J.; Emick, Jessica E.; Hipolito-Delgado, Carlos Porfirio; Cameron, Catherine A. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 2007
Does it matter if students are appropriately assigned to test accommodations? Using a randomized method, this study found that individual students assigned accommodations keyed to their particular needs were significantly more efficacious for English language learners (ELLs) and that little difference was reported between students receiving…

Ryan, Katherine E.; Fan, Meichu – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1996
Results for 3,244 female and 3,033 male junior high school students from the Second International Mathematics Study show that applied items in algebra, geometry, and computation were easier for males but arithmetic items were differentially easier for females. Implications of these findings for assessment and instruction are discussed. (SLD)
