Assigned depressed outpatients (N=32) to either group assertion training or "traditional" group psychotherapy. Results showed that over a relatively short period of time, assertion training was more effective than traditional psychotherapy in increasing self-reported assertiveness and in alleviating depression. Investigated the interaction of demonstrated knowledge of assertive behavior with treatments for nonassertive behavior to clarify the interaction of deficits with treatments. Results failed to support a differential treatment approach to assertion based on demonstrated knowledge. (Author)
