Each of 87 participating public and private two- and four-year colleges and universities was asked to identify and produce information on all transfer students received every term during 1967-68 for a study on the magnitude, mobility, characteristics, and academic success of transfer students in Illinois. Findings indicated that the higher education population was highly mobile; of the 357,000 undergraduates enrolled during the period, 29,685 were identified as transfer students. Of transfers, approximately 50% came from Illinois public junior and senior, 25% from out-of-state senior, and 14% from Illinois private senior institutions. Nearly twice as many transferred from senior (60%) as from junior colleges (34%); 40% transferred to public and only 16% to private institutions. Of in-state, fall 1967 transfers (4,000 were out-of-state), 5,708 were full-time and 2,426 part-time students; 63% had clear academic status; 8% were on probation; 23% were dropped; and 3% withdrew. More than 50% of all students chose liberal arts, education, or business as their major. Approximately 33% from four-year colleges were in the top 20% of their high school classes and had American College Testing Program composite scores of 25 or higher (the upper 15% in ability). After one year, more than 33% were not at their transfer institutions; of those remaining, grade point averages indicated average progress. (TR)
