Community colleges began as a way to offer higher education to those that wanted it but could not leave home to further their degree. As they evolved, they began allowing students to be admitted with very little admission requirements. The lack of admission requirements led to students being admitted into community colleges that were not prepared academically for success. Developmental education programs are offered to help academically underprepared students. Developmental mathematics is an area of concern because many students are taking these courses and many are not moving on to and through the gateway course. At a community college in the Southern United States, the developmental mathematics program has had many changes over the years. The pedagogy used in developmental mathematics is vast and often receives mixed reviews about its effectiveness. At this community college, Intermediate Algebra with a lab component was offered as a four-hour course for students scoring 17 and 18 on the mathematics section of the ACT. This study looks at students taking Intermediate Algebra with a lab component or College Algebra from 2014-2018 and analyzes their results. There are 4177 students represented in the study. The results indicate that Intermediate Algebra with a lab component did not benefit students that took the course before taking College Algebra.
