Trends in U.S. High School Students' Occupation Choices from 2012 to 2023. ACT Research. Working Paper. R2323
Jeff Allen; Jonathan Wai
ACT, Inc.
Using a dataset of over 16 million students who took the ACT® test, we examined occupation choice trends from 2012 to 2023. Students increasingly were undecided or selected occupations in Finance, Computer and Information Sciences, and Math/Quantitative areas. Students decreasingly chose Pharmacy, Communications, Visual and Performing Arts, and Education occupations. High-achieving students trended toward Computer and Information Sciences and away from Education. Students generally trended toward occupations with Conventional interest environments and away from occupations with Artistic interest environments. Students also trended toward occupations projected to grow over the next decade and away from occupations that typically attract more females. Some trends may have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and some trends varied by gender and for students who are Asian. We discuss implications for career counseling, workforce planning, and improving workforce diversity.
