How Standardized Tests Make College Admissions Fairer. ACT State & Federal Policy. Issue Brief

Institutions of higher learning are are returning to test-required admissions policies after finding that standardized tests help them better assess the academic preparedness of all applicants. This brief presents evidence that: (1) The objective standard set by standardized tests makes the college admissions process fairer for students; (2) ACT is committed to ensuring that the ACT® test adheres to industry best practices for equity and fairness; and (3) Through State and District testing programs and the important but underused fee waiver program, ACT strives to give all students an opportunity to take the ACT test.
