Exploration of Anxiety in New Elementary Students after One Year in a Specialized Learning Environment
Kathryn Elizabeth Womble
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Dallas Baptist University
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders among children and adolescents. In addition, anxiety is strongly connected to academic performance, poor social functioning, and specific learning disabilities. The current study aimed to explore anxiety in new first-fourth grade students identified with learning difference(s) after 1 year in a specialized learning environment. June Shelton School and Evaluation Center located in Dallas, Texas served as the specialized learning environment and treatment provided through which to examine any changes in anxiety levels according to the quantitative and qualitative analyses performed. Shelton is a large private school dedicated to serving students with above average intelligence with learning differences. The quantitative portion of the current study analyzed the T-scores of adaptive and behavior problems on the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3) completed during the admissions process (Time 1) and the T-scores on the BASC-3 completed after 1 academic year (Time 2) in the specialized learning environment. The qualitative portion examined parents' perceptions of their child's first year at Shelton gathered through open-ended questions developed by the researcher. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used to analyze BASC-3 scores. Results revealed that there were no significant changes in adaptive and behavior problems on the BASC-3 between Time 1 and Time 2. Findings from the qualitative analysis revealed that parents perceived changes in their child's social, emotional, and academic functioning. Changes in anxiety were observed by parents; however, the most important change that parent participants noted was an increase in self-confidence.
