Special Needs Schools, Priority I. Student Achievement Results.
Simons, Mavis; Crawford, Patricia
After the 1984-85 evaluation of the Special Needs Project in the North York, Ontario Schools, it was decided to extend the standardized achievement testing for the 1985-86 school year. Because of previous test validity problems, testing was continued under more uniform conditions; practice tests were available and the achievement tests were administered by a group of special testers. About 90 percent of the students in the third and sixth grades were tested. The Gates MacGinitie Reading Comprehension Test and Canadian Achievement Tests--mathematics computation and mathematics concepts and applications--were administered to 693 third graders. Canadian Achievement Tests--reading comprehension, mathematics computation, and mathematics concepts and applications--were administered to 668 sixth graders. Grade 3 scores were higher than the results from 1985 and 1981. Mathematics computation scores were at the expected norm, while reading comprehension and mathematics concepts scores were 8 and 5 months below the expected level. All sixth grade subtest scores surpassed the 1984 testing; mathematics scores also surpassed the 1981 results. Computation scores were within 1 month of the expected norm, 2 years below level in reading comprehension, and 1 year below in mathematics concepts. (GDC)
