Indians and Adult Basic Education: A Handbook.
North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs, Raleigh.
This document offers guidance to educators concerned with enhancing recruitment, retention, and graduation of American Indian adult students, especially in North Carolina. Following a summary and recommendations of the project committee, the guide traces the history of the Indian communities from 1900 to the present and outlines the educational background of Indians in North Carolina. Then, suggestions for effective program development for Indians are provided in the areas of recruitment, retention, motivation, and graduation. Extensive appendixes list contributing organizations; describe Pembroke State University--which was founded as an Indian school; describe the various communities of North Carolina Indians; provide a student self-assessment questionnaire and a suggested reading list; offer some ways for teachers to compliment students; and discuss the benefits to students of passing the General Educational Development Tests.
