Trends in Medical School Applicants & Matriculants 1983-1992.
Association of American Medical Colleges, Washington, DC.
This report presents statistical data in charts, graphs and tables illustrating trends in undergraduate medical school applicants and matriculants over the past decade. It highlights information at the milepost years of 1983, 1987, 1991, and 1992. Major trends are identified in the following areas: (1) the applicant pool (has been increasing since 1988); (2) number of matriculants (has remained relatively constant over the last 10 years; (3) gender (women applicants rose from 34.0 percent in 1983 to 41.8 percent in 1992; (4) race/ethnicity (proportion of white applicants has declined from 79.5 percent in 1983 to 65.0 percent in 1992); (5) age (the mean age of applicants is relatively unchanged); (6) premedical overall grade point average (has declined slightly from 3.31 to 3.24); (7) premedical science grade point average (has declined slightly from 3.23 to 3.13); and Medical College Admission Test scores (no trend data available due to a major revision of the test in 1992). Data are also provided on parental occupation, state of residence, size of hometown, citizenship, undergraduate major, grade point average by ethnicity/race, and admission test areas of assessment.
