The Effect of a Leadership Development Program on Students' Self-Perceptions of Leadership Ability
Levy, Dayna Dunsmoor
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Widener University
Equipping a healthcare workforce with leadership skills to drive change and innovation through the twenty-first century is imperative. This research measured outcomes of students' participation in a year-long leadership development program at a small, private, urban healthcare university in the northeastern United States. A mixed method approach to gather quantitative and qualitative data regarding outcomes was used. Study included a pre-test, post-test, control group, quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent groups, using the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale-Revised Version 2 (SRLS-R2) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Qualitative data from participant evaluations were also examined Results indicated that leadership development program participants showed growth on the Management-by-Exception sub-scale of the MLQ; and level of participation significantly impacted growth on the Inspirational Motivation sub-scale of the MLQ. Non-significant findings were obtained for all other factors on both the MLQ and SRLS-R2. Content analysis of qualitative data identified themes such as: Not yet a leader; Gratitude; Self-awareness, reflection and personal growth; Career Development; Confidence; Leaders at all levels; and Interprofessional interaction.
