Ross, Adam M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Dallas Baptist University
The current study researched the self-reported full-range leadership behaviors of 184 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1, 2, 3, and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) athletic performance coaches through the utilization of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X; Bass & Avolio, 1995). NCAA Division 1, 2, and 3 athletic performance coaches were found to have significantly higher mean transformational leadership, contingent reward, and management by exception: active subscale scores, as well as significantly lower mean management by exception: passive, and laissez-faire subscale scores when compared to the normative mean. A one-way between subjects analysis of variance indicated that Division 1 and Division 3 athletic performance coaches had significantly different aggregate transformational leadership scores than Division 2 athletic performance coaches. Division 1 athletic performance coaches and Division 2 athletic performance coaches were also found to have significantly different mean idealized behaviors subscale scores. The mean individualized consideration subscale score was found to vary between Division 2 athletic performance coaches and Division 3 athletic performance coaches. An independent samples "t"-test revealed that the lone statistically significant difference between gender of athletic performance coach was in the management by exception: active subscale with males scoring significantly higher than females. In further analysis, a significant negative relationship was found between management by exception: passive subscale scores and education level.
