An Investigation of Superintendent Leadership Styles in the State of Illinois and Their Association with Superintendent Tenure and Preparatory/Doctoral Program Participation
Neil D. Lesinski
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
This correlational study analyzed the data from surveys administered to current Illinois superintendents. Two-way MANOVAs were used to identify if there was a statistically significant relationship between the nine factors of Transformational and Transactional leadership styles as measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and length of superintendent tenure or superintendent participation in a preparation or doctoral program. A statistically significant relationship was found between superintendents that had completed a doctoral program and the frequency of which they demonstrated Transformational Leadership domains in their work. A descriptive analysis was also performed to determine the most common leadership style among superintendents that completed the survey. An analysis of the descriptive statistics indicated that superintendents in the State of Illinois are more likely to demonstrate Transformational characteristics as opposed to Transactional characteristics.
