A Multiple Case Study Investigating K-12 Secondary School Administrators' Implementations of School Safety Strategies

School administrators across the U.S. continuously face increasing pressure to meet specific standards for student achievement through performance on standardized tests, causing conditions in which they focus their attention on improving student test scores, leaving relatively little to no time to address matters involving incidents that can threaten the school climate and safety. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand school administrators' perceptions and experiences of their roles and responsibilities in addressing incidents involving school safety and creating a safe and orderly school environment. The theoretical framework for this study incorporated full-range leadership and situational leadership theories. The case study research design was selected because it allowed school administrators to self-describe their perceptions of leadership, roles, behaviors, and practices related to school safety. Participants included ten school administrators from a metropolitan school district in the Southeastern United States. Data collection included using the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ5X), open-ended and semi-structured interview questions, and archival research information from the Georgia Department of Education--Georgia School Personnel Surveys. NVivo and SPSS (data analysis software) were used in the data analysis process. The study finding indicated six main findings for school administrators; 1) ensure preparedness, 2) implement or improvise threat-management strategies, 3) coordinate students and staff actions, 4) leadership roles and leadership styles are interdependent, 5) transformational style influences the leadership role, and 6) remove barriers to the implementation of effective school safety. These findings are imperative to practice and future researchers. School administrators must ensure that students and staff are kept safe and must be conscious of possible incidents involving school safety and increase their knowledge and management skills in this area.
