A Qualitative Study: Academic Deans' Self-Described Leadership
Thomas Gale Pittman
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to describe what style of leadership is self-described by Academic Deans of Bible Colleges and Seminaries in the United States to impact student success. The study will also seek to identify how these Academic Deans describe student success. This study used a qualitative descriptive method and design. The research questions were: What style of leadership is self-described today by Academic Deans of Bible Colleges and Seminaries in the United States that impacts student success? And how do Academic Deans of Bible Colleges and Seminaries in the United States describe student success? The study included thirteen individuals with who function in the role of Academic Dean or equivalent in function. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X), and the Student Leadership Profile Revised (SLP-R). Data was analyzed using thematic analysis and using the theme titles found in a specific, identified model of Transformational Leadership and Servant Leadership. The study showed that all research participants self-described themselves in terms that correspond to both leadership style definitions which brings up questions of whether these two models have enough distinction between them or whether further refinement of the instruments is necessary. Additionally, it was shown that student success is thought of more in terms of spiritual formation and readiness for ministry along the lines of the Christian faith rather than the standard definitions of the education industry like graduation rates.
