Working Effectively with Different Personality Types: A Look at the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
Khanagov, Diana
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n173 p66-67 Jan-Feb 2007
In 1921, Carl Jung wrote about four different types of personality, identified 24 centuries ago by Hippocrates. He theorized that these differences were not abnormalities in personality. Instead, he maintained that human behavior is predictable and classifiable that everyone has and acts upon personal preferences, established in early childhood. In 1942, a mother-daughter team, Katherine Cook Briggs and Isabella Briggs-Myers, turned Jung's theory into the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The MBTI identifies 16 personality types, with insights into how a person tends to approach life and events, why some people are good in different kinds of work and why people misunderstand each other. This article further discusses this useful tool that helps co-workers, families, teachers and children respect the differences between themselves.
