As part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress on reading, this volume reflects the theme of reference materials. Divided into subthemes, the first requires the individual to know appropriate reference sources, since reference sources are best utilized when an individual knows which type of reference to consult for a specific kind of information. The second subtheme requires the individual to use reference materials effectively, since once the appropriate source is located, an individual must be able to extract the desired information. In all but one exercise (which incorporated a real dictionary) facsimiles of reference materials were used.
