In comparison to a group in White, middle class schools, the Pupil Control Ideology Inventory (PCI) indicated that student teachers in ghetto-type schools were more custodial even before their student teaching. The supervising teacher was not a major factor in attitude change. (SJL)

Responses from a sample of 71 secondary teachers and 1,272 students were consistent with the hypothesis that teachers' sense of power would be directly associated with the consistency of their beliefs and behavior concerning pupil control. The hypothesis that highly militant teachers would favor strict control of students was tested using the Attitudinal Militancy Scale and the Pupil Control Ideology Form.
