ROTC Achievement Testing Program: School Years 1983-1985.
Hunter, Fumiyo T.
The U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) administered basic skills achievement tests to cadets enrolled in Military Science I (MSI) and Military Science IV (MSIV): Missouri College English Test, Nelson-Denny Reading Test, and Stanford Achievement Test: High School Mathematics. The samples adequately represented geographic regions and genders. In addition, data were gathered on racial and ethnic groups: Asian or Pacific Islander, Black, Hispanic, Caucasian, American Indian, native Alaskan, and other. The purpose of the testing program was to analyze achievement test data and to report findings that might be used by ROTC to develop diagnostic and screening standards. The results indicated that females scored higher than males in English; males scored higher in mathematics; and there were no substantial differences in reading. On all tests, the ethnic minority groups scored lower than Caucasians, with substantial differences for Blacks and Hispanics. The mean scores of MSI cadets were consistently lower than those of MSIV cadets. Although further research was recommended in order to establish cutting score standards for potential officers, it was noted that about 20% of MSI cadets might profit from remedial instruction in English and reading.
