Starting Tomorrow: Activities Teachers May Immediately Implement To Improve Instruction in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.
Texas Education Agency, Austin.
Intended to provide teachers with a variety of holistic activities to promote thinking skills and the synthesis of skills while also raising scores on the Texas Educational Assessment of Minimal Skills (TEAMS), this booklet focuses on activities which teachers can implement immediately. The publication contains major sections for each of the subject areas tested on TEAMS: reading, writing, and mathematics. All three content areas focus on, for example, learning to integrate and relate ideas rather than on drill and practice of isolated skills. The first section, on reading, contains a statement of reading philosophy, 10 reading activities, and definitions of terms. The section on writing contains a writing philosophy statement, 7 descriptive/narrative/class history/informative writing activities, 7 writing activities for other content areas, 4 activities to develop and strengthen the understanding of language structure, and 3 suggestions on grading and evaluating writing. The third section, on mathematics, contains a mathematics philosophy statement and 7 mathematics activities. (SR)
