Examined the factor structure of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) in a sample of 200 medical patients and 271 psychiatric patients. Results indicate the WAIS-R has a robust factor structure and provide evidence of Verbal, Performance, and Freedom From Distractability factors in psychiatric and medical populations. (Author/BH)

Determined the factoral strucuture of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised in a clinical sample (N=85) receiving vocational counseling and compared this structure to that reported by Silverstein (1982) for the normative group. A regression equation relating verbal and full-scale IQs was derived from scores of patients. Scores were highly correlated, and verbal IQ significantly exceeded full-scale IQ. Regression estimates closely estimated mean full-scale IQ, suggesting that the verbal scale serves effectively as a WAIS abbreviation. (Author)
