Day, Roger P. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1987
Reported and compared are recent recommendations regarding the potential for computer technology in school mathematics. These recommendations are also compared to current practice and to earlier recommendations. (RH)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Computer Uses in Education, Computers, Elementary School Mathematics

Bitter, Gary G.; Cameron, Allan B. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1987
Arizona State University uses the Computer-Administered Mathematics Examination to identify preservice teachers who need mathematics remediation. Reported are the results of the testing of several groups of students. Some of the students were retested after remediation. (RH)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, College Mathematics, Computer Uses in Education, Higher Education

Bollinger, Galen – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Presented are some current facts about symbol manipulators and their relation to high school mathematics. The development of computer algebra systems is discussed. Five areas of computer algebra needing investigation (skill proficiency, understanding, curriculum content, student homework, and equity) are identified. (MVL)
Descriptors: Algebra, Computer Graphics, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Software

Hayek, Linda M.; Stephens, Larry – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Examines factors related to computer anxiety measured by the Computer Anxiety Index (CAIN). Achievement in two programing courses was inversely related to computer anxiety. Students who had a home computer and had computer experience before high school had lower computer anxiety than those who had not. Lists 14 references. (YP)
Descriptors: Computer Literacy, Computer Science Education, Computer Uses in Education, Mathematics Achievement

Godlewski, James B. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Describes a study to determine if a school district implementing an unfamiliar curricular change completed the same tasks as those using a model developed by Bishop. Reports that the district was more task oriented when confronted with an unfamiliar curricular change than previously reported. (MVL)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Computer Uses in Education, Curriculum Development, Educational Development

Ediger, Marlow – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1988
Provides a behaviorist's approach to learning with the microcomputer. Considers the philosophy of dealing with computer learning including: drill and practice, using a word processor, problem solving, remedial work, simulations, tutorials, computer managed instruction, computer literacy, and inservice education. (MVL)
Descriptors: Behaviorism, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Literacy, Computer Managed Instruction

Stephens, Larry J.; Maher, Lana C. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1987
Described is a statistical methodology course offered at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The course covers descriptive statistics as well as some procedures for estimating and testing hypotheses. Students use computer statistical packages and write a computer program for some statistical procedures. (RH)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Computer Software, Computer Uses in Education, Course Descriptions

Talisayon, Vivien M. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Compares policies and programs on computers in science and mathematics education in the six ASEAN countries: Brunei, Indonesia; Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Limits discussion to the computer as a teaching aid and object of study, attendant problems, and regional cooperation. (MVL)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Computer Software, Computer Uses in Education, Elementary Education

Day, Roger P., Comp. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1987
Provided is an annotated bibliography on spreadsheets and the use of spreadsheets for science and mathematics. Each reference includes the following information: (1) author; (2) title of article or publication; (3) date; and (4) abstract. (RH)

Berenson, Sarah B.; Stiff, Lee V. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Compared are the survey responses on practices and perceptions on computer uses in classroom between a faculty group involved in changing 10 undergraduate courses in mathematics and science education (n=25) and a group of regular faculty (n=60). There were no significant differences between two groups except on the use of inquiry and guided…
