Removing the Fear of Developing a Culturally Proficient School
Dillon, Robert
Principal Leadership, v8 n1 p38-40 Sep 2007
Fear, such as fear of saying the wrong thing, fear of doing the wrong thing, and fear of being branded as intolerant, a racist, or worse, can be paralyzing for many school administrators in the United States because developing a culturally proficient school is a difficult task filled with the toughest land mines of all: the perceptions and attitudes of the public and the communities that they serve. This fear, however, does not have to be paralyzing or stop the good work and best intentions of school leaders if their efforts are supported with the tools they need to succeed. For a school, the journey toward cultural proficiency begins with the school leader getting his or her own house in order. In this article, the author suggests that school leaders must overcome their own fear and help their staff members overcome theirs to build a culturally proficient school.
