Consumer Protection--Who Protects You? How Can You Protect Yourself? Proceed with Caution: Consumer Safety In the Home, I.
Saskatchewan Consumer and Commercial Affairs, Regina.
The enormous and rapidly-increasing number of goods on the market makes it difficult to ensure that all consumer products are safe to use. Public concern about product safety has caused the enactment of a wide range of consumer protection laws. The result of this legislation has been that many agencies have been established to protect the public. Also, many voluntary organizations have been formed to promote and maintain consumer safety. In order to increase consumer awareness, this booklet provides listings of the relevant government agencies on both the federal and provincial level and of seven nongovernment consumer protection groups as well. The Independent Certification Agencies that concern themselves with consumer protection are also described to enhance consumer awareness. Even with many agencies available, it is the consumer who must exercise caution. Specific guidelines to assist consumers are provided. Also discussed is a method to increasing effectiveness in making consumer complaints. (SM)
