This article traces the evolution of Gandhi's exemplary relationship with nature through vignettes from his long life. Annotated are the religious roots and the environmental origins of his philosophical development, his contact with vegetarians and theosophists, and his responses to a variety of issues raised by the cohabitation of humans with animals.
