Learning Assistance Program: A Proposal.
Ast, Harley J.
Background information on Wascana Institute's (Regina, Saskatchewan) existing learning assistance programs is presented along with a proposal for a readily-accessible, one-stop learning assistance center (LAC) that will furnish the information and services underprepared adult learners require to achieve academic success. First, introductory material traces the history of learning assistance at Wascana, presenting information on the admission and enrollment of underprepared students in health sciences and nursing programs and on the first proposal for a learning assistance program and center in 1980 and resulting summer bridge reading/study skills and training assistance programs. The next sections define the services encompassed by "learning assistance," examine the primary functions of a LAC, and offer ten assumptions about learner development. Mission, goal and objective statements for the LAC are followed by a description of systems for learning assistance and a discussion of requirements for professional staffing, space, equipment and furnishings, and program materials. Finally, information on funding, implementation, and evaluation is provided, and concluding LAC proposals are presented. Enrollment data, job descriptions, and an extensive bibliography are included.
