Van Buren Intermediate School District. Common Threads for the Future. Michigan Exemplary Career Guidance Programs.
Van Buren Intermediate School District, Lawrence, MI.; Western Michigan Univ., Kalamazoo.
The Van Buren Intermediate School District in Michigan has developed a comprehensive guidance program that has been adopted by a number of school districts in the state. The Van Buren model is designed to teach all youth and adults the career development skills of information gathering, decision making, planning, and placement. This document contains information for teachers, counselors, and administrators on implementing the Van Buren guidance program, including an overview of the materials used and examples of the materials in use. The bulk of the document is made up of the student text, "The Formula for Your Future," which is a 1- to 2-week unit that teaches problem-solving skills to students. The skills are applied to a variety of living, working, and learning situations. The program is to be taught to eighth or ninth graders in a classroom setting. The instructor's overview is followed by "Car Problems," a student text that simulates problem solving. Next is "Work Worries," which includes information and activities related to career choice and occupational clusters. A student workbook accompanying this text measures career planning progress. The final section, "Educational Dilemmas," explores educational options related to careers. (KC)
