This course guide outlines objectives and content for a professional continuing education course on writing for publication. The first of two parts covers writing and publishing journal articles, while the second part addresses topics related to publishing a book manuscript: (1) approaching the publisher; (2) evaluating proposals; (3) negotiating contracts; (4) preparing the final manuscript; (5) processing the manuscript; (6) the production process; and (7) marketing the finished book. Six appendixes contain a table of proofreaders' marks, guidelines for publication in the Bulletin of the American Medical Association, an author proposal form, Medical Library Association guidelines for authors of monographs, a sample contract, and a sample permission letter.
