Cerebral Palsy Not Necessary: Maxi-Move. Do It Yourself for Parents with Movement Delayed Children under Eight.
Lotz, H. Winky
Written for parents to use in the home environment, this illustrated handbook describes the Maxi-Move program, an intensive one-year program of exercise for children of one to eight years of age, who have cerebral palsy. The program does not use physical therapy, patterning, or specific movement goals, but focuses on having fun, creating environments conducive to movement and exercise, and use of everyday tasks (such as feeding or bathing) as bases for the child's exercise and motor development. The nature of cerebral palsy and its effects on the body are described, and the underlying rationale for the exercises is explained, as are the learning processes involved in their use. Exercises designed for or involving relaxation, arms, aerobic fitness, hands, head, neck, rotation, balance, turning, backs, legs, shoulders, feet, and mouth are described and illustrated in detail. An annotated bibliography of about 30 citations is included. (CB)
