This career planning handbook is intended to help North Dakota high school students and their parents use all available career planning activities as they determine postsecondary objectives. The document includes 12 sections as follows: (1) career direction; (2) understanding self; (3) career awareness; (4) decision making, including making one's planning easier, study skills, and study skills worksheets; (5) model guidance programs; (6) time guides for grades 8-12; (7) career choices arranged by school departments, including common job characteristics and requirements, visual and performing arts, business, marketing, distributive education, foreign language, home economics, industrial arts, language arts, mathematics, music, physical education, science, social studies, suggested course outlines, a tentative 4-year plan worksheet, and keeping career choices open; (8) career planning references; (9) financial aid; (10) information on new college requirements, correspondence schools, college classes while in high school, what to look for in a campus visit, what to look for in a school catalog, and vocabulary; (11) occupational outlook, including the shape of the labor force and projected growth; and (12) jobs, including a map of job service offices, federal jobs, apprenticeship programs, military, job search worksheet, interview tips, letter of application, and an outline for a resume.
