Checking Your Negotiations Style: The Situational Negotiations Approach to Bargaining.
Bohannon, Randy; And Others
This manual presents a collaborative "situational negotiations" approach to collective bargaining. After a brief introduction, part 1 describes the traditional adversarial bargaining model, using a case study from a medium-sized school district in the state of Washington to illustrate how the aftermath of confrontational bargaining is likely to be marked by grievances, poor staff morale, and continued distrust between employees and the school district. Part 2 describes the "Interest Model" of collaborative bargaining, which aims at achieving a mutually acceptable agreement based on shared principles. A case study from Ketchikan, Alaska, illustrates one such approach, where bargaining is based on a preamble (included in the text) setting forth common principles based on students' best interest. Part 3 outlines the proposed "Situational Negotiations" approach to bargaining, which incorporates a four-stage strategy for resolving conflicts of interest that might otherwise thwart a collaborative bargaining process. Schematic charts illustrate this model, and examples of its use are provided. (TE)
