Report of the 1985-86 National Survey of Science and Mathematics Education.
Weiss, Iris
This is the report of a national survey of approximately 1,000 teachers and administrators from a sample of 425 schools nationwide. The report includes a description of the sample design, instrument development, data collection, file preparation, analysis procedures, and survey forms. Topics covered in the report include science and mathematics courses; use of textbooks in science and mathematics classes; instructional objectives and activities; science and mathematics teachers; professional development; and factors which affect instruction in science and mathematics education. Among the findings were: (1) many science teachers lack adequate training; (2) half or more of the science and mathematics teachers felt unprepared to use computers as an instructional tool; (3) a large proportion of teachers have not taken a course for college credit in the last 10 years; (4) though many teachers attend conferences and meetings, the amount of time devoted to inservice education was typically less than 6 hours per year; and (5) the percentage of classes using hands-on activities has dropped since 1977. The report also stressed that the majority of science and mathematics teachers are somewhat isolated from facilities and resources needed to effectively teach their classes. (CW)
