The UMCP Graduate Perspective. MLS Research Highlights. Research Report #16.
Maryland Univ., College Park. Div. of Student Affairs.
The report focuses on students (a Representative Group and a Black Group) who persisted at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) to graduation and discusses some of the factors traditionally associated with persistence to graduation. The report showed that significant numbers of students who have departed the university did so while in good academic standing. It was also discovered that students (especially black students) who lived on campus during their later years at UMCP were more likely to complete their degree program at College Park than students who lived with their parents that year. Discussions with UMCP graduates concerning their retrospective assessments of non-academic issues found that nearly three-quarters of the UMCP graduates found great satisfaction in their friendships and interpersonal relationships, in settling on their major, and in confronting day to day problems. Nearly all UMCP graduates were satisfied with their overall college experience, and two-thirds agreed that they expected to be identified as UMCP alumni. These findings notwithstanding, student departure prior to graduation raised issues involving the university's responsibility (course access, adequate advising) and student responsibility (motivation, personal investment, competing agendas). Appendixes provide data on enrollment patterns by academic standing for the Representative Group and the Black Group. (GLR)
