Koballa, Thomas R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Discusses a study which examined the attitudinal and subjective norm variables which impact the behavioral intentions of preservice elementary teachers. Results suggest that measuring preservice teachers' attitudes toward science cannot adequately predict nor provide a satisfactory explanation of their science teaching behaviors. (ML)

Mason, Cheryl L.; Kahle, Jane Butler – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Describes a Teacher Intervention Program modifying classroom techniques and environments for fostering the participation of girls in high-school science classes. Reports that students who were taught by trained teachers, compared to students who were not, have higher scores on tests of attitudes toward science, perceptions of science, and science…

Yager, Robert E.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1988
Reports on a study in which 61 science supervisors were asked to identify their most effective and least effective teachers. Differences were found regarding gender, quantity of National Science Foundation workshop experiences, and certain elected in-service experiences. (TW)
Descriptors: Inservice Teacher Education, Science Education, Science Instruction, Science Teachers

Duschl, Richard A; Wright, Emmett – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Investigates the manner and the degree to which science teachers consider the nature of the subject matter in their decision making when they plan and deliver instructional tasks. Considerations for student development, curriculum guide objectives, and pressures of accountability dominated decision making. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Decision Making, Science Curriculum, Science Education

Garnett, Patrick J.; Tobin, Kenneth – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Investigates specific strategies and activities used by two chemistry teachers to enhance student understanding of chemistry at the 11th- and 12fth-grade levels. Discusses teacher characteristics, class activities, classroom management, and monitoring for understanding. (YP)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Foreign Countries, Science Instruction, Science Teachers

Searles, William E.; Kudeki, Naile – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1987
Reports on a study done in Quebec, Canada, to determine the level of agreement or disagreement between principals and teachers using established criteria to measure the effectiveness of a science teacher. Results were used in an attempt to construct a profile of the attributes of an outstanding science teacher. (TW)
Descriptors: Evaluation Criteria, Evaluation Methods, Foreign Countries, Science Education

Sanford, Julie P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1987
Reports on a study designed to assess the kinds of learning opportunities students had as they dealt with science content and the problems teachers faced in managing different kinds of assignments. Management strategies associated with these assignments are described and the effects of these strategies are considered. (Author/TW)
