Reviews the literature of the critical thinking/problem solving approach to learning and discusses how these concepts relate to teaching research skills. Two activities designed to teach critical thinking and research skills in the context of grades 5 and 6 social studies are summarized. (2 references) (MES)

School librarians developed and tested a game which would help familiarize students with reference materials. A clue was provided each day, Monday through Friday, and a competition was held to see who could find the answer earliest in the week. (LS)

Games have only recently been accepted as educational tools, but their potential value is yet to be realized. It is suggested that school library media specialists should investigate this method for actively involving students in the learning process. Game construction and a sample game are included. This project designed to teach library and thinking skills to grade 7 students emphasized the importance of metacognition. Students were asked to choose a research topic and to prepare and evaluate daily research strategies. Allotment of time for planning and reflecting on strategies was considered crucial to the project. (MES)
