Huck, Schuyler W.; And Others – Teaching of Psychology, 1992
Presents a classroom demonstration illustrating the connection between spread and Pearson's r. Discusses different factors that may result in an increase, decrease, or no change in r. Describes an exercise using decks of playing cards to generate hypothetical data on variables of intelligence quotient (IQ) and grade point average (GPA). (DK)

Gifford, Vernon D.; Harpole, Sandra H. – 1986
This study was designed to determine the effect of high school physics, the frequency of high school physics laboratory use, and high school mathematics background on the success of students taking first semester physics. Data were obtained from undergraduates (N=248) at Mississippi State University. The final letter grade in the first semester of…

Exit, Voice, Loyalty and Neglect as Student Responses to Dissatisfaction: An Act Frequency Approach.
Mahaffey, Tom; And Others – Canadian Journal of Higher Education, 1991
A study investigated the use of frequency of specific behaviors as an indicator of college student response to dissatisfaction. A population of 423 students from 5 universities helped categorize behaviors as characteristic of 4 constructs: exit, voice, loyalty, and neglect. Twenty acts emerged as viable indicators of the constructs. (MSE)

Carmichael, J. W. Jr.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Determined: (1) if traditional variables predict performance of black Americans in first-year chemistry at a traditionally black institutions (if so, what is the predictive procedure?); (2) if predictive power for males differs from females; and (3) what implications can be drawn from comparison of this study with past investigations. (JN)

Pope, James A.; Evans, John P. – College and University, 1985
A model using four categories of college applicants (enrollment deposit paid, deposit not yet paid, applicants not yet admitted, and those who have not yet applied) that allows forecasting of freshman enrollment from any point in the admission process and simulates the effects of trends and strategies on enrollment is outlined. (MSE)

The Role of Studying, Academic Variables, and Initial Course Success in Outcomes of College Courses.
Pace, Ann J.; And Others – 1990
The study sought to identify and measure factors in course achievement in actual college courses acorss subject areas and instructors, and to assess their influence on indicators of learning or achievement in these courses. Data sources included: interviews with instructors in two introductory economics courses and one introductory biology course;…

Walsh, John F. – Teaching of Psychology, 1991
Describes a SYSTAT macro that generates sufficient information from the data available to compute an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc analysis. Suggests the macro procedure as a tool for those who want to explore relations among the results of published studies when raw data are not available. Recommends classroom uses. (DK)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Computer Uses in Education, Courseware, Higher Education

Rixse, James S.; Pickering, Miles – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Investigated predictors of success in organic chemistry and how well freshmen chemistry predicts grades in other science courses (biology and physics) and success in entering medical school. Subjects were 254 freshman enrolling in freshman chemistry at Columbia College (the all-male undergraduate division of Columbia University) in 1978. (JN)

Simon, James F.; Chambers, David W. – Journal of Dental Education, 1992
An unsuccessful attempt to develop a standard battery of aptitude measures to distinguish practicing dentists is reinterpreted. A sample of 116 dentists showed few differences from the norm group on 22 potential predictors, with some differences counterintuitive. It is concluded that broad conceptualization of characteristics required to complete…

Blose, Gary – New Directions for Higher Education, 1999
Describes how the State University of New York, using large databases and regression techniques, has developed several coordinated, comprehensive efforts to evaluate and project current and future enrollments. One requires decomposition of the student population into mutually exclusive subgroups. The other, superior, approach uses logistic…

Craney, C. L.; Armstrong, R. W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Analyzes the relationship between allied health students' (N=304) performance in general chemistry and the American Chemical Society's Toledo Exam (Form 1974), mathematical Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores, and high school chemistry grade. Also discusses use of findings to identify students who had a high risk of receiving low grades. (JN)

Arnold, Ree K. – Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, 1983
A technique for evaluating the relationship between game statistics and outcomes of contests is proposed. The technique can be used to determine the relationship between selected game factors and winning or to determine how often various results of certain instances of play occur in a contest. (PP)

Elliott, John C. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1990
Examined whether the relationship between selected affective variables and mathematics achievement was different for nontraditional college students (more than 25 years old) than for traditional students. Reports no significant differences for pretest/posttest between traditional/nontraditional students. Lists affective predictors for mathematics…
