Moser, Carl J. – Lutheran Education, 1980
"Chisanbop" is a Korean word which means finger calculation method. It is based on the Korean abacus, and its emphasis is on fives. By using Chisanbop techniques, one can add, subtract, multiply, and divide large numbers. Chisanbop can be taught most effectively to large groups in the second grade. (JN)

Nicholson, A. R. – Mathematics in School, 1989
Presents examples of 3-by-3 and 4-by-4 magic squares. Proves that the numbers 1 to 10 can not be fitted to the intersections of a pentagram and that the sum of the 4 numbers on each line is always 22. (YP)

Schwartzman, Jan; Shultz, Harris S. – Mathematics Teacher, 1989
A square-dance number is defined as an even number which has the property that the set which consisted of the numbers one through the even number can be partitioned into pairs so that the sum of each pair is a square. Theorems for identifying square-dance numbers are discussed. (YP)

Sawyer, W. W. – Mathematics in School, 1989
This article discusses the classroom use of discovery of number pattern. Provided are examples of a table of squares, multiplications of numbers, and algebraic expressions. (YP)
Descriptors: Algebra, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Mathematical Applications

Long, Calvin T. – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
Problems which can be solved or partially solved by the Gregory Interpolation Formula are presented. The formula is explained and applied to three problems. (MNS)
Descriptors: Mathematical Formulas, Mathematics Instruction, Number Concepts, Problem Solving

Goodman, Terry A.; Bernard, John – Mathematics Teacher, 1979
An example is presented that can be used to introduce the study of limits of sequences through recursive formulas yielding square roots. (MP)
Descriptors: Instruction, Learning Activities, Mathematical Formulas, Number Concepts

Olson, Melfried; And Others – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
A procedure for generating the "nth" term of figurate numbers is given. (MNS)

Davies, H. B. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
Attention is drawn to an ancient Greek method for finding the least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers. A link is established between this method and a well-known method of obtaining the highest common factor (HCF) numbers. This leads to consideration of some relationships between HCF and LCM. Aud, Joel; Gintz, Chris – 1998
This computer software program helps to make classroom worksheets, take home assignments, and school mathematics tests easy to design and manufacture. The accompanying printed teaching guide provides technical information for setting up and using the program, along with sample worksheets and instructions on how to create them using the software.…

Groves, Brenton R. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1984
Plotting a polynomial over the range of real numbers when its derivative contains complex roots is discussed. The polynomials are graphed by calculating the minimums, maximums, and zeros of the function. (MNS)
Descriptors: Functions (Mathematics), Graphs, Mathematical Formulas, Mathematics

Byrkit, Donald R. – Mathematics Teacher, 1988
Presents number tricks appropriate for use in workshops, mathematics clubs or at other times when stressing recreational mathematics. (PK)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Arithmetic, Computation, Mathematical Formulas
Harris, Mary Jo; VanDevender, Evelyn M. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1990
Identifies four causes of confusion in reading mathematics related to numbers, symbols and sentences, vocabulary, and directionality. Discusses techniques for overcoming each type of the confusion. (YP)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Computation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics

Hellman, Morton J.; Long, Madeleine J. – Mathematics Teacher, 1993
Discusses the problem of how the stars on the American flag would be arranged were another state added to the Union. Presents solutions using linear equations based on conditions given in the problem. (MDH)
Descriptors: Mathematical Enrichment, Mathematical Formulas, Mathematics Education, Mathematics Instruction

Mathematics Teacher, 1984
This section includes brief articles on holding a 'metric review show,' the 'normal' approach to graphing, graphing polynomials by using the powers of the factors, and some sum derivations. (MNS)
Descriptors: Algebra, Functions (Mathematics), Graphs, Mathematical Enrichment

Dengate, Bob – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1992
Suggests structured investigations as a method of teaching mathematics to preservice elementary school teacher. Presents an example problem that asks students to determine the maximum number of regions that can be created by connecting any two points around the circumference of a circle. (MDH)
