Details of an 18-lesson unit of instruction that has been used successfully with eighth-, ninth-, and tenth-grade classes are presented. Each lesson centers around individual computer programs written in Applesoft BASIC. Copies of two programs are provided, and ways to acquire the other 16 are noted. (MP)

A college course designed to teach students about the mathematics of symmetry using pieces of wallpaper and cloth designs is presented. Mathematical structures and the symmetry of graphic designs provide the starting point for instruction. (MP)

The nature of an investigation into numbers termed Nearly Isosceles Pythagorean Triples (NIPTs) is detailed. The exploration, even though it is stated to have no practical value, is defended as helping pupils see the beauty of patterns in mathematics. An approach to problem solving is described that is based on analysis of how fast model race cars can go. The exercises were used to replace standard time/rate/distance exercises, and were found to be greatly enjoyed by both girls and boys. (MP)

An attempt to make problem solving a real part of the mathematics program in a second-grade classroom is described. It is felt that teachers can aid children in establishing attitudes of willingness to take risks and tackle unfamiliar tasks by focusing early on problem solving as a process. (MP)
