Wells, Anita G.; Bhattacharya, Kakali; Morgan, Dianne D. – Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, 2009
This study used phenomenological methodology to explore how 4 Deaf employees described quality of camaraderie of participation in work-related tasks and relationships. Three invariant themes echoed through the data. The first theme was hitting the ceiling quickly and choosing to stay; employees remained in the secondary job market for years…

Martinez, R. D. – Academic Therapy, 1985
External reinforcers should not be used to the point of dependency with special education students who need to become more aware of their own internal controls. Student performance contracts are one way of developing this awareness. (CL)

Charlop, Marjorie H.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
Three experiments assessed the efficacy of various reinforcers to increase correct task responding in a total of 10 autistic children, aged 6-9. Of the reinforcers used (stereotypy, delayed echolalia, perseverative behavior, and food), task performance was highest with opportunities to engage in aberrant behaviors, and lowest with edible…

Alavosius, Mark P.; Sulzer-Azaroff, Beth – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
The performance of four direct service providers in feeding, positioning, and transferring physically disabled patients was measured. Use of written instructions led to slight and usually brief changes in performance. The introduction of feedback, especially a continuous schedule, resulted in marked improvements which were maintained. (Author/JDD)

Haring, Thomas G.; Kennedy, Craig H. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
This study found that, in a task context, differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) effectively reduced problem behavior and increased task performance of 2 adolescents with severe disabilities (ages 15 and 19), whereas a time-out procedure was ineffective. In a leisure context, time-out was effective while DRO was ineffective.…

Salend, Spencer J. – Academic Therapy, 1987
Special education teachers should involve their students in developing and implementing a successful contingency management system by including them in such activities as selecting target behaviors, choosing reinforcers, writing and reviewing behavioral contracts, and evaluating the system. Guidelines are presented for eliciting student attitudes…

Ford, Lisa; Rosenfield, Sylvia – School Psychology Review, 1980
Behavior of eight emotionally disturbed boys improved dramatically after a school psychologist observed their class and suggested management techniques. The psychologist clarified the teacher's role as educator, not clinician; restructured the daily schedule; increased the teacher's understanding of reinforcement; and implemented a token economy…

Fuchs, Lynn S.; And Others – Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, 1991
Nineteen special educators implemented Curriculum-Based Measurement with a total of 36 learning-disabled math pupils in grades 2-8 to examine the effects of goal line feedback. Results indicated comparable levels and slopes of student performance across treatment conditions, although goal line feedback was associated with greater performance…

DiGangi, Samuel A.; And Others – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1991
Two students (ages 10-11) with learning disabilities exhibited improved on-task behavior and academic performance during self-monitoring procedures, with additional increases resulting from self-graphing procedures. However, little improvement in on-task behavior and academic productivity was noted with the introduction of self-reinforcement and…
