Hempling, Harold G. – Physiologist, 1984
Outlines a sequence used to prepare and to administer examinations by computer. The sequence, based on programs described in an earlier issue of "The Physiologist," is presented under four headings: preliminary steps; taking the quiz; grading the quiz; and flexible options. Information on obtaining the programs is included. (JN)

Mihkelson, Ann; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Discusses the use of special portapunch cards in the testing and grading of large student populations. The cards can be processed routinely at a batch station by laboratory staff having little knowledge of computers. The system not only allows cheap and reliable marking but also can accommodate a variety of tests. (JN)

Schaefer, Edward; Marschall, Laurence A. – American Journal of Physics, 1980
Describes an easy-to-use set of computer programs for the generation of multiple-choice and essay examinations in an introductory astronomy course. Program enables the user to establish files of test questions and to rapidly assemble printed copies of examinations suitable for photocopying. (Author/GS)

Chittenden, Edward; Meier, Deborah – Curriculum Review, 1985
Presents recommendations for improved testing practices in science based on an examination of contemporary assessment literature and interviews with educators. The recommendations address test format, teacher involvement in all steps of the testing process, and use of sampling strategies and computer technology. (MBR)

Gubareva, Alexandra E.; And Others – Biochemical Education, 1990
Automated evaluation methods, used in medical school training programs, are discussed. The use of situational questions which help students to make connections between the biochemical knowledge acquired and its application in medical practice is proposed. Examples of these types of questions are included. (KR)

Moore, John W., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Describes: (l) a microcomputer-based system for filing test questions and assembling examinations; (2) microcomputer use in practical and simulated experiments of gamma rays scattering by outer shell electrons; (3) an interactive, screen-oriented, general linear regression program; and (4) graphics drill and game programs for benzene synthesis.…

Aesche, Darryl W.; Parslow, Graham R. – Biochemical Education, 1988
Discusses the use of a bank of about 9,000 test items in a computer-assisted instructional program at Adelaide University (South Australia). Describes the program and outlines the steps in producing an instructional program. (TW)

Fletcher, P.; Collins, M. A. J. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1987
Reports on a study designed to determine whether or not biology students were being disadvantaged by taking computer tests instead of written paper forms of the same tests. Results indicated that mean scores on computer-administered and written forms of the same test were approximately equivalent. (TW)

Smith, Richard L., Comp. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1987
Contains an annotated bibliography of articles which deal with computer-assisted testing. Includes the author's name, the periodical in which the article appeared, and a short description of the article. (TW)
Descriptors: Annotated Bibliographies, College Science, Computer Assisted Testing, Computer Science

Wulfson, Stephen, Ed. – Science and Children, 1987
Provides reviews of six computer software programs designed for use in elementary science education programs. Provides the title, publisher, grade level, and descriptions of courseware on ant farms, drugs, genetics, beachcombing, matter, and test generation. (TW)
Descriptors: Animals, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Assisted Testing, Computer Software Reviews

Dawson, George – Science Teacher, 1987
Discusses the ISCS/FIRN Test Item Database, which contains 10,000 juried science questions that can help teachers prepare tests. Describes the process by which teachers can access the database and download certain questions into their own microcomputer. Provides lists from a sample search done using the various menus available. (TW)
