Larsen, Russell D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Box-and-whisker plots (which give rapid visualization of batches of data) can be effectively used to present diverse collections of data used in traditional first-year chemistry courses. Construction of box-and-whisker plots and their use with bond energy data and data on heats of formation and solution are discussed. (JN)

Rigbi, Zvi – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
It is not conceivable that in a mixture or compound a component may exist in a negative ratio. Traditionally, therefore, a negative value could not be plotted on triangular coordinates. However, negative values are explicitly allowed, and the results extend the use of triangular coordinates as shown in this article. (JN)

Sneider, Cary; And Others – Classroom Computer Learning, 1986
Discusses various software packages which help science and mathematics students make sense out of data (formulating hypotheses, interpreting graphs, analyzing possibilities, and collecting data with real-time graphing). Includes a list of commercially available programs for the areas, with program name, publisher, grade level(s), price, and…

Morton, George; Bradley, James – American Biology Teacher, 1979
Describes a laboratory exercise requiring students to separate a selected number of organisms into groups of increasing similarity and to relate these groups directly to the kingdom-species system of classification. (Author/MA)

Thompson, Robert Q. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Presented is a three-hour instrumental analysis experiment which allows study of software data-handling methods. These methods include sampling, boxcar averaging, smoothing, ensemble averaging, and digital filtering. Use of the program should provide students with a better idea of advantages and disadvantages of using such software data-handling…

Calle, Carlos I.; Wright, Lavonia F. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1985
Describes a menu-driven, data plotting program which runs on any Apple II plus, IIE, or IIC microcomputer. The program does a least-squares analysis of the data and gives the user the option of fitting the line through the data points. The complete Applesoft program listing is included. (JN)

McNaught, Ian J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Presents equations and techniques for calculating and interpreting many of the spectroscopically important parameters associated with the ground and second excited states of the iodine molecule. (Author/CS)

Myers, Richard L. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1983
Instructional strategies used in teaching oceanographic data collection techniques are discussed. These include having students examine actual data, plan and organize a research cruise on a specific budget, and analyze incomplete data sets. Rationale for using these strategies is included. (JN)

Hitchon, Arnold – School Science Review, 1975
Uses a printed sheet of paper to represent a plant population in a given area. Quadrat sampling is simulated by dropping a square coverslip on the sheet and recording the symbols under the coverslip. Line-transect method is simulated by having a student randomly adjust the sheet under a string. (GS)

Amenta, Roddy V. – Journal of Geological Education, 1984
Presents a laboratory problem in metamorphic petrology designed to simulate a research experience. The problem deals with data on scales ranging from a geologic map to hand specimens to thin sections. Student analysis includes identifying metamorphic index minerals, locating their isograds on the map, and determining the folding sequence. (BC)
