This booklet on counselor licensure is intended for professional counselors who may be interested in working toward the passage of counselor licensure legislation. Following a brief introduction to the topic of counselor licensure, a list of resource persons is given. A history of licensure and related credentialing activities is provided, followed by legislative guidelines for the passage of counselor licensure laws. Tips for working with legislators, and a series of articles on power, love, money, and politics are included. A discussion of legislative testimony and an example of the legislative process are presented. Suggested legislative language for counselor licensure laws and an example for a professional disclosure statement are given along with selected references. The appendices present licensure laws from Texas, Florida, Idaho, and North Carolina, as well as a position paper on licensure in the helping professions adapted by the board of directors of the American Association for Counseling and Development.
