Seventeen instructional units on Asian and Pacific culture, society, and economic life are provided in this handbook, the result of a workshop entitled "Pacific Rim Cultures in the Classroom." Most of the lessons include suggestions for classroom activities, quizzes, and supplementary reading matter. The instructional units are organized according to grade level. High school level units include: (1) "Washington Island Neighbors: The Philippines"; (2) "Group Identity versus Individualism in Japan and the USA"; (3) "Liberation of Women in USA and China"; (4) "Contemporary Chinese Life"; (5) "Comparing the Japanese and U.S. Business Environments"; (6) "Korea: Land of the Morning Calm"; and (7) "Leadership in China." Middle/junior high school units include: (8) "Are We Different After All?"; (9) "Culturopoly"; (10) "Travelers' Diaries"; (11) "Space Traveller: Teaching International Awareness through the Arts"; and (12) "What's in a Name?" Elementary units are: (13) "Appreciation of Culture through the Use of Global Folk Tales"; (14) "Heroes"; (15) "Why Rice?"; (16) "Korea through Storytelling"; and (17) "Korean Family Life." Two appendices include a list of Asian study centers and a list of sources of materials for teaching about the Pacific Rim.
